Karibu Solar Power creates a solar powered combination light and phone charger for people living in rural Africa. I was involved in a pro-bono project to redesign the product to be less expensive, simpler to manufacture and more reliable. The interactive model below shows the resulting design that significantly reduced part count and plastic molded part complexity.

Simplified PCB assembly.

KARIBU Solar Power is a social enterprise that makes energy available at the price of kerosene. We design, manufacture and distribute a solar pay-as-you-go “business in a box” kit for Tanzania. It is an income-producing asset for an entrepreneur (just like a chicken or goat) but it is also an affordable way to buy light (and mobile phone charging) for an end-consumer.
